Duanwu Festival (端午節, Duānwū Jié) or Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. It is also known as the Double Fifth.[citation needed] It has since been celebrated, in various ways, in other parts of East Asia as well. In the West, it's commonly known as Dragon Boat Festival.

Zong, zongzi, or Chinese rice dumplings are a traditional Chinese food, made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are cooked by steaming or boiling. In Cantonese, these rice dumplings are called joong. In Taiwan, the Min Nan call them tzang. Laotians, Thais, Cambodians and Vietnamese also have similar traditional dishes.

As part of the Duanwu Festival for the next coming week, my sister had to prepared some Zong for the festival prayers and some offered to the ancestor and also giving out to friends and family as they together celebrate the festival.

Here are some pictures taken, show how my sister prepared the Zong;

Dried bamboo leaves

Cooked bamboo leaves

Glutinous Rice (Fried with thick soy sauce and 5-spice powder)

Peanuts without skin (fried without oil) and Black eye beans (soak)

Dried mushroom (cook with think soy sauce)

Fried Vegetarian Meat

Fried roasted pork and chau sau meat

First, take 2 pieces of bamboo leaves

Second, fold a V shape at end

Third, fill in some glutinous rice

Forth, put in some peanuts and black eye bean

Fifth, put in some vegetarian meat or pork meat

Sixth, put in some mushroom

Last, put in glutinous rice to cover up the top

Now, hold the top position of the leave and fold down to cover the filling

Hold and fold it nicely as this part the filling can easily come out

Hold it properly and fold the remaining to left or right

Okay, fold like this

Next, take a string and start tide the Zong

Round n round...

Now, make a ribbon-tied

Here you go, we are almost done

Finally, do some touch up, if not later the filling will come out

Tadaa.....done. The complete wrapping. Wow! Look nice.

Here are the completed Zong and ready send to boil

Now the Zong is ready to boil and it take about 6-7 hours cooking time

Zong is ready for serving

Ground peanut filling

For the next few week, I guess we are going to have day and night Zong Menu, since my sister make so many. Hahaa. Bon Appetite
